Industry Update
The 2012-13 CTE Industry Update Program provides educators the opportunity to update their knowledge and skills and receive on-the-job training in CTE program-related industries. The program also enables educators to experience work-based learning in much the same way as their students. Applicants are especially encouraged to pursue experiences in new technology and innovations consistent with their CTE programs.

Educators from throughout Arizona are welcome to participate. Priority is given to employees from West-MEC member districts. The prices listed are for employees in member districts. CTE Certification Help Session – No Cost
Representatives from the Arizona Department of Education will be on hand to help you with CTE certification questions and to process applications. If you have any questions at all about CTE certification, you won’t want to miss this informative session. This workshop is available only to employees of West-MEC member districts. If you are processing an application, please bring the appropriate application, official transcripts, SEI certificates of training and personal check or money order. ADE processing fees are as follows:

Marketing Your CTE Program- Cost $10.00
This workshop is designed to equip you with the skills you need to market your CTE program to prospective students as well as parents and administrators. During this workshop you’ll learn marketing and recruitment strategies designed to increase program enrollments and program visibility.

Interviewing – Cost $10.00
Did you know that 75% of the hiring decision is made before the interview begins? As a candidate you have approximately 20 seconds to connect with the interviewer, if you do you’re eight times more likely to get the job. Having a successful interviewing strategy is a key component to getting a job. Attend this workshop with best-selling career author, Katreena Hayes-Wood, and learn the interviewing strategies she’s shared with hundreds of her Work Readiness Training students. You’ll learn what to do before, during and after the interview and how to answer the top 10 most frequently asked questions, including how to develop a simple, yet effective, 30-second commercial. Plan to receive tons of helpful and useful strategies that you can share with your students as they enter the workforce.

Get into Energy…Energy has it all – No Cost
Representatives from the Center for Energy Workforce Development, Estrella Mountain Community College, Arizona Public Service and Salt River Project will be presenting promising energy job opportunities for our students. Information on well-paying, stable careers, skills that transfer nationally, jobs that are active, hands-on and rewarding will be highlighted. As new technologies are created, workers will need new skills to install and operate the new energy systems, and this means new job opportunities in a stable and growing industry. So are you in? Join us so you can go back to your schools the very same day and motivate your students to find out more about exciting careers in Energy, starting this semester! Students will be eligible for a grant which allows them to complete the three industry supported certificates while they complete up to 10 college credits. The grant will pay all tuition, books and associated fees. An information meeting for parents and students will be held at EMCC on February 11th.

Solar Panel Construction Workshop – Cost $210.00
Attendees will construct a 15 w solar panel during the workshop. They will construct the panel then take back to their schools to use with their students. Photovoltaic power will be discussed and applied in this workshop. Attendees will leave with an introductory solar lesson plan as well.

Ten Tools to Increase Productivity – Cost $10.00
Want to learn some great ways to be more productive with technology? This class covers ten different technologies that can help you in the classroom. Technologies will cover topics such as sharing files, finding great articles for students, and creating innovative ways to communicate.

Working Closely with Guidance and CTE to Improve Student Engagement, Achievement and Transition – No Cost
If participation in CTE is related to stronger attachments to school, fewer drop outs, and better preparation for post-secondary and/or a high demand career, both CTE and Guidance must analyze data to further reach students, parents, educators, and communities. Participants will use current CTE data to evaluate guidance program.

Laboratory Safety and Management – Cost $50.00
This workshop is designed to help participants develop a laboratory improvement plan including management, clean-up procedures, safety procedures and meeting monitoring agency mandates. Participants will have the opportunity to evaluate their CTE labs and develop a management system for their CTE labs. Participants, who complete the lab safety course, have the opportunity to earn 15 CEU hours approved by ADE to be used for moving from provisional to standard CTE certificate or for recertification hours. The class is recommended for Industrial Technology teachers (i.e. welding, agriculture, building trades, pre-engineering, cabinet-making, automotive, etc.)
To meet the 15 hour requirement, participants will also complete two related assignments and submit them via email. In addition, participants will meet one additional time to tour a high school industrial technology program.

Legal and Ethical Issues for Counselors – Cost $20.00
We will discuss the unique challenges school counselors face because we work with minors in a school setting. Participants will discuss state laws and court decisions, as well as the recent changes to the American School Counselor Association ethical codes. Participants will also have an opportunity to work through several ethical dilemmas.

CTE 102 Beyond the Basics – No Cost
This class will increase your understanding of CTE and West-MEC. The course will be an interactive question and answer session exploring these questions:
• How will data gathered from course completion and assessments be used?
• When will West-MEC add new programs and where will they be located?
• How is West-MEC funded, and how is that funding shared with member districts to support satellite CTE programs?
• What is new with 2+2 and 2+2+2 stackable certificate and/or degree programs?

Adobe Web Interactive Forms – Cost $10.00
This workshop will teach participants how to make documents become interactive in web forms. Participants will learn how to insert text fields, radio buttons, check boxes, and submit buttons into a PDF web form. Participants will also learn how to electronically distribute an interactive form and track results.

CTSO Advisers Tool Kit – Cost $50.00
This workshop is designed to help CTSO advisers get a handle on managing a CTSO. During this workshop advisers will discuss how to manage a CTSO, how to integrate a CTSO effectively in the curriculum, related legal and ethics issues, conducting awards recognition functions and more. The workshop will feature presentations from seasoned CTSO advisers. Attendances at April 25 and May 9 sessions are required.
Through a West-MEC partnership with Rio Salado College, participating teachers who have completed the Adviser Toolkit workshops, the all-day Beginning Officer Training and Conducting Effective Meetings workshop with their students and who complete three (3) on-line related workshop assignments are eligible to earn two (2) college credits for CTE 240: Career and Technical Education: Designing, Implementing, and Managing Student Organizations. • April 25 and May 9, 3:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Location – Paradise Valley High School, 3950 E. Bell Road, Phoenix, 85032
Classroom Management – Cost $100.00
Course topics include: Effective classroom management techniques including classroom discipline models, establishing and maintaining positive classroom interactions, differentiated learning and strategies for motivating students, essentials of lab safety, health, safety and environmental regulatory agencies and regulations that impact career and technical classrooms.
This course will be a hybrid course, part on-ground and part on-line. You will be required to attend some large group sessions involving all participants and some small group sessions that will be related to your teaching discipline. Your on-line assignments will be directly related to developing and maintaining effective classroom management strategies and practices. During the course you will be visited at least once by the West-MEC course facilitator.
Through a West-MEC partnership with Rio Salado College, participants will have the opportunity to earn 4 college credits for CTE 220, Career and Technical Education: Classroom Management and Lab Safety. (This course is ADE approved for teachers needing to obtain standard ADE teaching certificates.) Class meeting dates will be set based on participants’ schedules. Beginning Officer Training – Cost $7.00 per person
This is a one day, stand-alone training designed for CTSO officer teams and advisers. This workshop will cover a variety of topics including officer elections, officer duties, events management, and developing a Program of Work. Participating teams will receive lunch, notebooks, jump drives and a gavel.

Culinary Arts Assessment Development – Cost $100.00
This three day class is designed for Culinary Arts instructors who are interested in working with their colleagues to prepare and design lessons and multiple choice formative assessments for classroom use. We will cover retrieving data from the state assessment system, interpreting that data, and using it to build classroom lessons. We will also discuss course sequence and develop a set of item specifications for teacher use. Instructors will be provided time to work in small groups to develop lessons and questions. It is suggested that teachers bring their textbook or any additional materials they would like to use as a resource for the lesson and question building time.

Galileo – No Cost
We will start with building a library and continue through running and scoring an assessment. It is suggested that teachers bring their textbook or any additional materials they would like to use as a resource for the lesson and question building time. If you did not participate in the Culinary Assessment workshop, please bring 1 – 10 multiple choice questions that can be used with Galileo
